Background

Experimental findings have shown that the deleterious expansion of mortar bars in ASTM C 1260 test is related to the formation of expansive alkali-silica gel reaction product. Previous studies conducted under the SHRP program have shown that the addition of certain lithium-based admixtures such as lithium hydroxide or lithium nitrate, to fresh concrete will significantly reduce the ASR gel expansion. Research has also been conducted using lithium to treat hardened concrete with favorable results. The objectives of this project are to evaluate the ability of lithium compounds to arrest the ASR attack in hardened concrete, and to develop specifications for field implementation of the lithium-based technology.
